Muscle damage induced by isotretinoin.

چکیده
The absence of antibody to HTLV-I and HIV in patients with multiple sclerosis from France and similar findings in Italian patients (L ChiecoBianchi et al, personal communication) argue against these viruses having a role in the development of multiple sclerosis. Furthermore, the negative results in patients from the French West Indies, an area endemic for HTLV-I, strengthen the lack of a serological association between HTLV-I and multiple sclerosis. Epidemiologically, the geographical distributions of multiple sclerosis and HTLV-I are quite different. Areas endemic for HTLV-I are mainly south western Japan, the Caribbean regions, and central Africa, countries where multiple sclerosis is virtually absent. In Japan the prevalence of infection with HTLV-I has a north-south gradient but that of multiple sclerosis does not.5 Furthermore, HTLV-I is not endemic north of 400 latitude, either in Europe or in America, which are known as high risk areas for multiple sclerosis. If epidemiological data suggest that there is an association between multiple sclerosis and an infectious agent, probably viral, then a retrovirus other than HTLV-I and HIV might be responsible.

Creatine phosphokinase values and myalgia during isotretinoin therapy
Background: Systemic isotretinoin is a very effective medication for the treatment of acne, but it has some side effects. One of its side effects is musculoskeletal problems such as increased levels of creatine phosphokinase (CPK), myalgia, and serious muscle damage such as rhabdomyolysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of myalgia and its relationship with the elevation of ...
متن کاملPresumed isotretinoin-induced extraocular myopathy
Isotretinoin a synthetic analogue of vitamin A is primarily used for cystic acne not responding to conventional treatment. Several ocular side effects including blurring of vision, decreased dark adaptation, corneal opacities and meibomian gland atrophy have been reported with prolonged use of isotretinoin. There have been reports of muscular damage caused by isotretinoin. Extra ocular myopathy...

indicate damage to the muscle and myoneural junction. Such changes do not occur in primary muscle disorders, denervation atrophy, or drug toxicity.2 Similar changes at the myoneural junction have, however, been reported in Becker's type of progressive muscular dystrophy.3 In the absence of other factors known to precipitatemuscledamageourdata indicate that isotretinoin may induce reversible dam...
متن کاملIsotretinoin-induced acute severe myopathy involving pelvic girdle muscles: A case report
Oral isotretinoin has been in widespread use for more than three decades. It causes numerous side effects; skin and mucous membrane being commonly involved. Musculoskeletal adverse effects are also known to occur, but pelvic girdle myopathy is rarely reported. We report myopathy involving pelvic girdle muscles in a young male who received oral isotretinoin for folliculitis decalvans.

Isotretinoin (13-cis retinoic acid) is frequently prescribed for severe acne [Peck, G. L., Olsen, T. G., Yoder, F. W., Strauss, J. S., Downing, D. T., Pandya, M., Butkus, D. & Arnaud-Battandier, J. (1979) N. Engl. J. Med. 300, 329-333] but can impair night vision [Fraunfelder, F. T., LaBraico, J. M. & Meyer, S. M. (1985) Am. J. متن کاملThe effect of phytochemical compounds on indicators of oxidative stress, inflammation and skeletal muscle damage caused by physical activity
Physical activities are associated with increased production of reactive oxygen species. The production of reactive oxygen species is dependent of the intensity, duration and type of activity. Although the physiological amounts of reactive oxygen species are necessary to regulate cell reactions, their excessive production can cause numerous damages to the structure and function of cells and wea...
